judge told 21 companies to block access to material deemed religiously offensive, or the face of China in the style of action
Google and Facebook have removed the content from certain websites in India, after a court has said that India remove "Like China" if nothing is done to protect religious sensibilities.
The two are among 21 companies ordered to develop a mechanism to block material deemed religiously offensive after private petitioners to court on images deemed offensive to Hindus, Muslims and Christians.
People have had two cases against Internet companies in India, fueling fears of censorship in the world's largest democracy.
"[Our] review team examined the content and that content off the local domain [Google] search, YouTube and Blogger," a spokesman for Google Paroma Roy Chowdhury.
At the heart of the dispute is a law passed last year that companies in India are responsible for the content posted by users on their websites, and giving them 36 hours to finish the content, s' there is a complaint.
Last month, the companies said it was impossible for them to block content. Roy Chowdhury, declined to comment on what had been removed, and a Facebook representative said only that the company would issue a statement later.
A lower court in New Delhi to hear a case, a civil lawsuit filed by an Islamic scholar, said Monday the company to write down the measures taken to block offensive content, and submit reports in 15 days.
- "Microsoft has filed a motion to dismiss the lawsuit on the grounds that it disclosed no cause of action against Microsoft," said a company spokesman. "The matter is sub judice and no further comment can be given."
- This lawsuit was filed by a scholar, Mufti Aijaz Qasm Arshad, who runs a website called fatwaonline.org, which gives answers to moral questions.
The high court has yet ruled on the appeal, but the judge warned in January that are responsible for the content of their websites and told him he could " that China "to block sites, if the company put its house in order.
For Rai, the court ordered the companies to be tried for crimes related to the distribution of obscene material to minors, after showing pictures, he said, were offensive to the Prophet Muhammad Jesus and various Hindu gods and goddesses, and several politicians.
