Earlier this week, we brought the story of a radiologist and two violin makers, who used computed tomography (CT) to create a copy a 1704 Stradivarius violin. The instrument produced was almost an exact replica of the original, in terms of shape, thickness and volume of its wooden parts are concerned. As one of our readers pointed out, however, many of the tonal quality of instruments of Stradivari is probably due to the characteristics of the microstructure and the resonance of the wood that has been caused by growing conditions over time.
