could be an era of information, while Victoria was on the throne? We need to know if the scan engine works Babbage
In 1837, the British mathematician Charles Babbage was the first description of a computer. He called the scanning engine and spent the rest of his life refining, but never finished it. Last year I started a charity, Plan 28, dedicated to complete Babbage computer in time for the 150th anniversary of his death in 2021.
To understand why it is useful to build a team mechanic for nearly 200 years, you must first understand what a computer. Although Babbage's analytical machine is completely mechanical, has the same essence as a modern computer. This computer is an essence of the important consequences of the work of another British computer pioneer, a century after Babbage. Exactly 99 years after Babbage invented the computer, Alan Turing wrote his now famous paper describing the universal Turing machine. An important idea that emerges mathematician Turing paper and other American mathematician Alonzo Church is that each team has the same capabilities, no matter how they are constructed. Because the Church-Turing thesis, as it is called, we know Babbage Analytical Engine (with levers and gears), theoretical Turing machine and the latest tablet all have the same fundamental limitations. Of course, Babbage's machine by modern standards were extremely slow.
But Babbage's machine was something that nobody else has: its magnitude. It is the size of a small steam engine, which means that people will appreciate the work and the internal architecture of a computer to view operation. The analysis engine has a central processor (now "chip") and expandable memory is programmed with punched cards, and even have a printer. And Babbage had not forgotten the human operator: a bell is included to help in case of problems
- Once completed, the device should be able to run some programs that have waited nearly two centuries to the team that has been designed to be completed. Babbage prepared perforated cards containing programs (perhaps containing programs working with his collaborator Ada Lovelace), which have been carefully preserved until today.
Plan now 28 - the name of a set of plans Babbage - brought together leading technical experts in the design and fundraising just begun. The first stage of the project is the study of thousands of pages of handwritten notes that Babbage left behind, to determine exactly what needs to be built.
Once the study is completed, we will build a 3D computer simulation of physical analysis engine to verify that the design is possible. Getting to this stage is likely to cost around £ 250,000. It is only once the feasibility of the construction of the machine is set to the fundraising effort more necessary to begin actual construction. But what we hope to do is to create a working monument to the man who designed the computer, and inspire scientists and engineers today to dream of a century in the future.
