Humans use

the larynx down to talk, while koalas

Calls coupling

that exaggerate male potency

Benjamin D Charlton is a postdoctoral research biologist at the University of Vienna. His research area is the vocalization of mammals, particularly its role in mating. His work has focused on deer, giant pandas and koalas.

Why choose to study koalas mating call?

Man

koalas roared their activity peaks during the breeding season. This suggests that the male koala bellows may convey important information for reproduction. In addition, men have a very low frequency components bellows, suggesting underlying anatomical adaptations and strong sexual selection for these parameters of low frequency.

Have you studied before the koalas?

We had previously shown that male koala bellows individually distinctive, and also that the male and female koalas could discriminate between the bellowing vocalizations of different males. In the current study, data were used to determine whether a male koala bellows provide reliable information on body size of the caller, and to confirm whether male koalas have a larynx down permanently, an adaptation of other mammals, which lengthens the vocal tract and acoustic impression of the body increases the size of the caller.

How would you describe a koala roar?

Koala bellows Women usually start with a "staccato" introductory phase is abruptly and amplitude compensation. This is followed by a continuous series of puffs sound harsh, short breath, and belching. The phases of post-inhalation sound very exciting.

More

the koala, the depths of his roar?

Yes Mayor male koala bellows forming products with less or resonances of the vocal tract. The formants are the resonant frequencies of the air in the vocal tract, and has been shown to provide reliable information on body size of the appellant in several mammalian species. Vocal tract and produce a smaller, closer forms of space and the length of the vocal tract is positively correlated with the size of the head and body in a wide range of mammals.

But down the koala is much lower than what you would expect from an animal of its size ...

who were interested in whether male koalas have a descended larynx?

Yes, we wanted to provide irrefutable evidence of the larynx men permanently in this species. To permanently descended larynx, the Koala may indicate a strong selection pressure for the distribution and possibly to exaggerate the size of the body with the forms of this species.
