The first digital library in the United States only raises fundamental questions about the purpose of a wider library

The city of San Antonio, Texas, recently announced that the first public library fully digital in the United States will open in Bexar County later this year: a library that does not contain a single book. But there is no online equivalent of public space, which is very sensitive to corporate control and technocratic institution if the physical remains essential. Library without books is not a contradiction in terms, but a continuation of the central objective of the library, access to knowledge and information, and a public statement about the value of this access.
