For the first time the National Archives has released data showing that the volume of documents held by government departments and other public bodies in 1982 or earlier that have not yet been processed under and open public the 30-year rule. They intend to update each year.

also shows the impact of the transition to the 20-year rule is being phased in starting this year over the next 10 years. To start the movement equivalent to two years of records for 1983 and 1984 are transferred to the National Archives this year. These data show that the volume of files that all departments will be involved. The equivalent of two years of these files are transferred each year until 2022 when the processs is complete.

The first 21 bodies, including large departments, are the source of 90% of the files that are sent to the National Archives.

The tables show that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs held what it calls its "Special Collections" more than 250,000 files dating from the 19th century. 4.57 meters include files Soviet spies Burgess and Maclean and files in the British Mandate in Palestine and victims of Nazi persecution.
