O2 is to increase the cost of phone calls and texts outside of Europe for its 18 million customers in the UK, with prices due to increase of 130% from 28 November. The operator stated that the accusations came with their prices in line with competitors.

The company will increase the cost of making calls to U.S. and Canada from 90 pence to ? 1.10 per minute, and increase the fee for receiving calls on countries 90p 39p per minute plus - an increase of 130%. Tourists who send SMS in these countries pay 40p a message, 60% of 25p.

Elsewhere in the world, customers could pay up to ? 1.50 per minute for calls and ? 1.25 per minute to receive (see table).

In July 2012, the cost of making a phone call from another EU country from about 30p to 24p per minute, and the cost of sending texts fell to 7p after a European decision.

A spokesman denied the O2 increases are implemented in response to the accusation of coverage across Europe, and stated that they intend to reduce the burden and align prices with its competitors.
