On the Map by Simon Garfield – review

This collection of curiosities map comes with all the enthusiasm of a child with an encyclopedia and a sugar rush

In terms is essentially a collection of short stories on the history of cartography, which are interconnected by energy Simon Garfield and enthusiasm in all very entertaining.

Demonstrate knowledge

  • The calendar works roughly chronologically (excluding digressions), and begins with Ptolemy Geographica - a card that uses a language rather than images - before accelerating Vinland Map, which suggests Columbus's discovery of America was preceded by a long period.
  • then tells us the number that identified the source of the cholera epidemic in London, before being taken to Robert Louis Stephenson
