likely to need a new head of the FCC Obama, Susan Crawford is a champion of the open internet and opponent cartels industry
In the second term of President Obama takes shape, many of his senior appointments leave - a standard for both presidencies term. Although most of the media attention focused on the key ministerial posts such as Treasury, State and Defense, some important posts below this level are also abandoned, or should be. One of the most important of them is the highest office of the Federal Communications Commission, where the current president Julius Genachowski is considered endangered. His replacement, assuming they are, must be someone who tries harder to keep the promises that Obama as a candidate in 2008.
With few exceptions, such as blocking the purchase of the Ministry of Justice of AT & T, T-Mobile, U.S. telecommunications policy in recent years has tended to reward the consolidation and control of broadband and wireless for a few large companies. Among other disturbing realities, two-fifths of American States, yielding to the influence of lobbying by telecommunications companies now prohibit local governments from providing Internet services or legal barriers have been erected as more difficult.
Comcast, by far the largest provider of cable, Verizon has an agreement with the equivalent of a treaty of non-competition, Comcast has a "fixed line" Business and Verizon Wireless network - an agreement that would never have passed regulatory review. Broadband speeds lag behind other developed countries in Latin - which is not surprising given that many other countries require their competition in telecommunications for ISPs offer a service on lines
The FCC Chairman is one of the five commissioners, but crucial, because he or she has powers of control, unless the agenda and much more than that in practice. Genachowski, from my point of view, was that half challenges the status quo, and the National Broadband Plan the FCC is a wish list of a real plan - which is not surprising given the control business and established. And with this, the recent speech of President intentioned proposed Gigabit connections across the country came to words in bold with little to back them up.
- These days, I participated in a conversation with a number of people who believe that there is another, the ideal candidate. Her name is Susan Crawford
- However, given the history of the administration to date -. And especially the torrent of insults and opposition to his nomination would the telecommunications industry and its oligopolistic true believers - your appointment may seem unlikely. However, for all sorts of reasons, I think this is the right decision. (Disclosure:. Crawford aware for years and consider him a friend and we have many mutual friends and allies who contributed many articles below)
- Start with your background. I can not think of another potential candidate to a better understanding of the issues - based on research and practical experience - and with a better idea of ??what it would take to move America connected direct risk Collaboration forfaiting under current policies. Here is an example: a law professor who focuses on telecommunications. He has served on the review team to advise the FCC 2008-09 Bush-Obama transition and as Obama for science, technology and innovation. His latest book, Captive Audience: The telecommunications industry and monopoly power in the New Golden Age is a must read for anyone on how to follow the theme, such as his recent articles and opinion pieces. (I do not agree with all proceeds Crawford for change, but always thinking.)
Crawford was also an opponent of internet control laws, such as soup odious law was killed a year ago, almost to the last minute, by the militants. She understands the value of innovation, while the Hollywood Sign copyright innovative and allies want to get permission first. And as someone who really believes in the first amendment, which abhors censorship inherent in these proposals, and to fight to prevent it.
Upon the appointment of a new head of the FCC, so sooner or later, Obama can tell the American people - and the world - which recognizes one of the most important challenges of the 21st century : a telecommunications infrastructure that offers all Americans the opportunity to participate in the economy based on modern means of communication. It is free from the pressures of reelection. It is time to move on. Appointment Crawford send the right message.
